Black Henna Tattoo Information

Black/Fake Henna

If its black and shiny and peels off the skin its a TOXIC HAIR DYE!
If the artist tells you to wash it off with water in 20 minutes, It is not HENNA!

If you have recieved a temporary tattoo called "black henna" that stained your skin pitch black and faded pink or purple after a couple of weeks, go get your money back. If they say no, report them. If it burned your skin, made you sick or scarred you, get a lawyer, you will win!

Coffee/Water + Hair dye does not = henna.

Don't get burned! Don't buy a $3.00 Hair dye kit as a $39.00 Fake henna kit.

HENNA IS NOT BLACK.

Notice: If insurance is required as part of a venders agreement, event owners might be interested to know that the insurance company's have no obligation to pay if the vender is using a misbranded product (i.e.." Black Henna") in the place of natural henna and in the event of a law suite the liability will focus on the promoter and owner of the event facility. One known case was settled for $100,000. The insurance company did not pay because the artist was using hair dye branded as henna.

Attention Professional Henna Artists and Clients: It is illegal to knowingly put Chemical Based Hair Dye on the skin and misbrand it by selling or referring to it as henna.

Warning:
Putting Chemical Based Hair Dye with (PPD's) PHENYLENEDIAMINE on the skin of a minor without the parents permission is a crime, You could go to jail and/or pay big fines... The main thing is that you could scar someone for life. Not to mention the risk from inhaling the powder.

PHENYLENEDIAMINE is used to make KEVLAR®, epoxy coatings, including fungicides, corrosion inhibitors, urethane coatings, rubber chemicals, hair dyes and polyurethane, IT SHOULD NOT BE USED AS HENNA ON ANYONE EVER.

Natural henna is fun and safe!
Try our Premixed Natural Henna which is 100% natural and safe for all ages!

This page is Sponsored by: Natural Expressions as a public service and in an effort to help protect the art of Mehndi (henna body art) from the greed that defiles it.

Henna is not black! Henna is a skin safe reddish dye that has been used for skin decoration and bodyart for thousands of years. If you want to try henna please buy natural powder and mix it with none toxic things like lemon juice and safe pure oils. At Natural Expressions we say "if you can't put it in your mouth, it really doesn't belong on your skin."

"The problem with all of this is that (fake henna made with PPD) provokes cross-allergy, making people allergic to other things which contain para substituted amino compounds,"

"This includes local anaesthetics, sun-protection cream and other cosmetics - eye shadow, for instance. Also clothes - black ones containing certain dyes - as well as many hair dyes and printing chemicals.

"I really would warn parents to keep their children and teenagers away from this stuff at all costs. These things could affect the rest of a person's life,"

MEASURES TO PROTECT YOURSELF by Marie Anakee Miczak
If you are buying from an online henna retailer, ask were they obtain their henna. If they are not forthcoming, pass on buying their products. Also immediately pass on henna products that do not have any sort of labeling on them. This is illegal in the US. Do not use any type of henna product that explains it is "fast acting" or only "takes a few minutes to work". Also watch out for henna products that are only indicated for the hands and feet. Pure and fresh henna can be applied and give good color outcome anywhere. Before applying henna as Mehndi or hair color, always do a patch test. Remember henna is a plant which can have various levels of inherent chemicals. It is by no means standarized. Doing a patch test first would have saved many from having severe allergic reactions as seen with denatured henna products. Be very careful at street fairs and other public events where you have no time to do a patch test before having a Mehndi design. If you must go ahead, be sure to obtain the proper name and contact information of the artisan in case something adverse happens. Also demand to know every ingredient in the paste. If the artisan does not know or tells you it is a trade secret, pass and be safe. It goes without saying that one should fully avoid commercially produced products called “black henna”. According to the US FDA it is illegal to add colorants to henna, so even if the product does not contain PPD, what ever gives the black hue to the powder is not legal for sale or use in the US. >>>More

Letters from visitors:

Recently at an Art Festival I had several of my students get henna tattoos... That was wonderful, beautiful.. The unfortunate thing was that about 75% of those who got the black henna had a variety of reactions to it. The worst being skin literally flaking off this child's back, to burns, blistering and now scaring.

" I was recently on vacation in July in Key West, Florida when I decided it would be fun to have a black henna tattoo. I saw places applying these all over Key West. I finally ended up getting on at Mallory Square by a street vendor. It ended up making my skin red and raised due to irritation. I thought, "oh, it will go away." That is until I started researching and reading about this dangerous practice. My skin is still red and raised in the shape of a dolphin since my tattoo and now I am afraid it is a scar. I made a doctors appointment today. I really want to keep this from happening to others. "

After my "henna" tattoo turned into a mass of red itchy blisters, I was totally outraged to discover that I had probably not been tattooed with henna at all, but with some dodgy black chemical hair dye. The doctor has prescribed me a course of very strong cream to calm the rash, but he told me it will take a long time to go away. My advice? To avoid an itchy painful rash - stay away from any "black henna" tattoos.

I had mine drawn in my forearm so that everybody could see it when I got home to my dismay, it has been 2 weeks already and the tattoo has started to fade but the tattoo was replaced by a really itchy and annoying rash that came from the tattoo. It has grown worse every passing day, the rash has become bigger and has become more itchier.

"Skin eats and skin speaks, revealing whatever goes on inside the body," explains Pratima Raichur, a New York-based aesthetician, chemist and author of Absolute Beauty: Radiant Skin and Inner Harmony through the Ancient Secrets of Ayurveda (HarperCollins). Raichur says if you apply essential oils or any herbal concoction to the skin, traces are detectable in your urine two hours later. The same could be true of other unwanted substances that come into contact with your skin.
